A downsizing couple are enjoying a better lifestyle - and shorter journeys to work - after relocating to a new housing development in Waterlooville with Help to Buy.

David and Lindsay Ingram had both become fed up with the traffic on their daily one hour commute into Portsmouth from their home in Funtley near Fareham.

And when their children moved out of the family home, David, 45, and Lindsay, 50, decided it was time to move to a more convenient and accessible location.

The couple purchased a three bedroom semi detached house at Bloor Homes' Berewood development off Maurepas Way, and used the Government's Help to Buy Equity Loan scheme to get more for their money.

David said: "The journey into work was becoming a bit of a nightmare and we knew that the roads into Portsmouth from Waterlooville were less hassle. Also, the prices in Fareham were becoming quite expensive and we realised we could get more for our money in Waterlooville.

"When we came to look at the Berewood development it just looked and felt right. Every house looks different. No two houses are the same and the whole development is laid out very nicely."

The couple bought the three bedroom Studland show-home, and David comments "I wanted a nice big kitchen and my wife wanted a south facing garden and the house ticks both of those boxes. We just love the whole package.

"The sales advisors at Berewood were absolutely fantastic and kept us up to date with what was happening. As a company, Bloor Homes have been brilliant to deal with and I would recommend them to anyone."

David, who works in IT, and Lindsay, who works in finance, secured their new home with a smaller deposit and mortgage thanks to the Help to Buy Equity Loan Scheme; which allows purchasers to borrow up to 20 per cent of the purchase price of a property as an equity loan which is interest free for the first five years*.

"For us it has freed up more money because we didn't need such a big deposit, and we got a very good deal with our mortgage" said Lindsay.

"My son wants to buy a house and we have recommended that he uses the Help to Buy Equity Loan as it's a really good scheme."

With attractive surroundings, a shorter 20 minute drive into work, and a wide range of amenities on their doorstep, the couple say they are enjoying a much better way of life.

David adds "Where we lived before was a bit out in the country and there were no shops within walking distance. Here you can just nip to the shops, there's a big retail park just across the way and the town centre has got everything you need. The lifestyle here is so much better."

*The equity loan is interest free for the first five years, but in the 6th year of ownership, a fee of 1.75% of the equity loan based on the market value at the time you purchased is payable monthly, rising annually by the increase (if any) in the Retail Price Index (RPI) plus 1%. This is applicable if you have not paid back your equity loan by the end of year 5. An illustration will be given to you at the time of purchase.
