The whole process was quicker than buying my new sofa!

The whole process was quicker than buying my new sofa!

Like many twenty-somethings, Jonathan Clark, 25, was living with his parents and eager to have a place he could call 'his own'. With the average age of a first time buyer now at a staggering 37 and being aware of large deposits currently required to purchase a property on the open market, Jonathan deemed this an ongoing challenge. That was until he discovered the 'Help to Buy' scheme available on a stylish apartment in Southampton.

"My salary alone was not sufficient to support a mortgage and when I heard that with the Help to Buy scheme you only require a 5% deposit, I was interested in finding out how this could help me" said Jonathan.

Help to Buy is a government backed equity loan scheme available to help first and next time buyers take a step onto, or move up the property ladder. The scheme is offered to assist the purchase of selected new build homes, with the support of an equity loan up to 20% of the value of the home; potentially an ideal way to get on the property ladder for first time buyers struggling to raise a large deposit, or for those who need to move up the property ladder who either don't have enough equity in their current home or aren't able to raise a larger mortgage.

Jonathan found his modern, stylish apartment on Rightmove. He contacted the developer to arrange a viewing and fell in love with it straight away. Putting in an offer and speaking with a mortgage adviser, who explained the process of contacting HomesinHants, the Help to Buy agent for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, the legal process was soon underway. Within just 6 weeks of viewing the apartment and making an offer, Jonathan had the keys to his first home.

"The whole procedure was seamless. I contacted Crest Nicholson to view the property, really liked it, made an offer and before long moved in! I'm surprised at how quick it was" he said.
With Jonathan's deposit of £8,800 and 20% Help to Buy equity loan, he is now paying just £635 per month to own his own home. The two bedroom apartment in central Southampton is perfect for Jonathan as it is a good distance from shops, bars, work and his friends. It features a large south facing balcony with great views, two large bedrooms, one with en-suite, and lounge-kitchen diner.

"My new apartment is fab, it's very spacious and in a brilliant location" said Jonathan. "I'm really grateful for the scheme. It's allowed me to get onto the property ladder and I've realised that buying a home on Help to Buy is quicker than ordering a brand new sofa!" Thank you!
