Owning your first home together is an exciting time for any young couple but the large deposits required to buy on the open market is a discouraging restraint. Many twenty-somethings are living with parents to an age that is forever increasing.

Hayley Clark, 23, and Henry Jones, 21, knew just this and were actively researching into the options available to them through their local Help to Buy agent, HomesinHants.

"We heard about the Help to Buy scheme on the news when it was released in April. We were originally looking into using the previous government scheme available, but then Help to Buy was announced. We did all the research that we could and HomesinHants were helpful and explained all that we needed to know." said Hayley.

Help to Buy is a government backed equity loan scheme available to help first and next time buyers take a step onto, or move up the property ladder. The scheme is offered to assist the purchase of selected new build homes, with the support of an equity loan up to 20% of the value of the home; potentially an ideal way to get on the property ladder for first time buyers struggling to raise a large deposit, or for those who need to move up the property ladder who either don't have enough equity in their current home or aren't able to raise a larger mortgage.

Hayley and Henry found their ideal property at the Linden Homes development, The Mallards, in Totton, Southampton. The apartment is located in a quiet and peaceful area, close to everyday necessities and local amenities.

"We were amazed at the finishes on all of the appliances and furnishing. The fitted kitchen had everything that we wanted and the bathroom was a lovely size. The living room is huge for us both, we couldn't wait to take the next step" said Henry.

Once the couple appointed solicitors, they had nothing to worry about other than what furniture to choose.

"The solicitors dealt with it so promptly, and any information we required was given to us straight away. We had phone numbers and names of people to contact if we had any questions throughout the process, including Financial Advisors, the sales team at Linden and HomesinHants."

Within just 4 weeks of reserving, the couple were proud owners of the spacious 1 bedroom apartment. With a mortgage deposit of £6,250 and the Help to Buy equity loan, the couple's monthly mortgage payments are affordable at £650.

"We have been trying to get onto the property ladder for such a long time, but with deposits so high nowadays, we were struggling to make any start. We have now found our perfect home thanks to the Help to Buy scheme" said Hayley. "The whole process of buying our first home couldn't have been any easier. It was stress free and a simple procedure, no scary long form-filling and it's completed within weeks!" she added.
