Help to Buy Scheme enables young couple to get on the property ladder!

Renters who dreamt of becoming homeowners found that buying a property at Taylor Wimpey's Alver Village development in Gosport, Hampshire, was within reach - thanks to the Help to Buy Equity Loan Scheme.

Chris Coupe (26) and his partner Joanne Castleton (22) had been renting a one-bedroom apartment in nearby Fareham for about two years - and decided they were ready to take the plunge as first-time buyers.

But, like many other young couples, Chris and Joanne found themselves in a bind as all their money was being spent on rent payments and bills, making it impossible to save enough money to afford a deposit for a new home.

The Help to Buy Equity Loan Scheme enabled them to secure a Government loan for 20% of the full price of their new home, meaning they only required a 75% mortgage and a deposit of just 5%.

Chris and Joanne were able to move in with Chris's parents in Stubbington, Hampshire, for about 16 months while they saved up the money for the deposit.

"Without Help to Buy, there's no way we would have been able to make this move," says Chris. "We just wouldn't have been able to afford it, simple as that. Help to Buy made getting on the property ladder possible."

Once the deposit was saved the next big decision was deciding where to move to, and after a thorough internet search the couple found a perfect property and location at Taylor Wimpey's Alver Village development in Rowner, Gosport.

"It's an up-and-coming area now," explains Chris. "Since Taylor Wimpey started building Alver Village, it has really turned things around. They got rid of some old blocks of flats and now there are some lovely new homes in their place which are very pleasing to the eye. What used to be plain and grey is now really welcoming, and with some new green areas.

"And since Taylor Wimpey came here, it has encouraged other redevelopment in the area - a new Tesco, Subway and community centre have all opened here now. It's really improved. We also knew two other friends who had moved to the development and they spoke highly of the area and of Taylor Wimpey."

Chris and Joanne found Gosport to be a convenient location for their places of work with good road links nearby, and they were also pleased with the wide variety of day-to-day amenities within easy reach.

Combined with Alver Village's handy location was the availability of stylish new two-bedroom houses at the development. The couple chose the 'Beckford' design which Chris says offers plenty of room and they enjoy the layout of the open-plan kitchen and lounge.

"Going from a one-bedroom apartment to owning your own two-bedroom house is such a big improvement. A new-build home is a blank canvas and Joanne has really enjoyed buying lots and lots and lots of things to decorate," jokes Chris.

The couple, who moved in to their new home in November, were also thoroughly impressed by Taylor Wimpey's Sales Executives during the entire buying process.

"The whole thing, from initial viewing to getting the keys, only took about two-and-a-half months," explains Chris. "The Sales Executives are real experts in their field and helped us with all the paperwork, which they knew like the back of their hands. They were faultless. If we ever had a query, they were always on the end of the phone. Nothing was too much trouble.

"Even after moving in, their after-sales service is incredible. If we have any issues they are more than happy to help," adds Chris.
