Scott and Melissa step straight into their dream home with Help to Buy
Getting onto the property ladder had always been the aspiration for Scott and Melissa Allam. But the married couple, who had previously been renting in Southampton's West End, never imagined they could take the step straight into a four-bedroom detached house. And yet, thanks to the Help to Buy scheme, Scott, 29, and Melissa, 27, were able to put down a five per cent deposit on an Astley house type at Bloor Homes' Crowdhill Green development in Fair Oak.
With easy access to the M3, the development is ideally placed for Asda store manager Scott's commute to Basingstoke, while it's just a 15-minute drive away from transport administrator Melissa's workplace in Hedge End. Scott said: "We were always keen to get onto the property ladder, particularly as the cost of renting on the south coast is so high, and we had been looking properly for about a year.
"We looked specifically at new build properties because we wanted to use the Help to Buy scheme, as being able to buy a house with a low deposit was particularly attractive. It was always our dream to eventually buy a large detached house, but we never thought we'd be able to afford one straight away. Our monthly mortgage payments are £100 less than what we were paying in rent so it was almost a no-brainer.
"We visited a number of developments in the area but Crowdhill Green ticked all the boxes. It's ideally placed for the M3 and we really like the semi-rural location. There's a wood at one end of the development and it's so peaceful. It feels like we are out in the countryside but still within easy reach of major roads.
"The development itself is lovely, there's a really nice feel to it and I think it's going to be a great community environment."
Scott and Melissa chose the Astley house type after being impressed by its spacious open-plan layout and light-filled interior. Scott said: "We particularly like the open plan kitchen/dining/living area. There's a vaulted ceiling at one end with skylights, and that really won us over. Overall there's plenty of space and all four bedrooms are a good size."
Commenting on the experience of buying their first home, Scott added: "It was much easier than I expected. Everything went smoothly and the sales team were friendly and helpful all the way through the process."
A range of two, three and four-bedroom homes are currently available at Crowdhill Green, priced between £297,500 and £520,000.
