Help to Buy South has helped hundreds of people to purchase or rent their new home.  Here are just a few of the success stories:

"Shared Ownership isn't just new build properties"

Julie and Martin Kimber were privately renting after living abroad for a few years and moving back to their home town of Southampton. Searching for what would be their future, long term affordable home, the couple came across an advert for a HomesinHants open day, the government-appointed Help to Buy Agent for Hampshire and Isle of Wight. Both Julie and Martin were interested to find out more and what help was available.

"It didn't work out for us when we moved abroad, so when we returned we thought that we could no longer buy due to our age and how much working life we had left to accommodate a mortgage." said Julie.

The couple went along to the HomesinHants open day and spoke with various developers, financial advisors and Hampshire's Help to Buy team. Julie and Martin filled out their application form at the open day and were delighted that they had been accepted for the Shared Ownership scheme. Hoping to purchase a house rather than an apartment, the search for their forever home began.

"We knew that we could afford a mortgage but unfortunately we didn't have enough deposit saved" said Martin. "It took us a while to find the perfect property but we were thrilled when a two bedroom house in Southampton came available through the Shared Ownership Resale scheme." he added.

Julie and Martin's new home in Totton, Southampton, features two large bedrooms, a downstairs toilet and has a spacious hallway. The garden is of a good size and fortunately for the couple, the home has two parking spaces and a driveway.

"We already lived in Totton whilst privately renting for two and a half years so we're familiar with the area. Our new home is on the edge of the New Forest which is an added bonus. We also work in Southampton; therefore it is a good commuting distance for us." said Julie.

Purchasing a 50% share in the £168,000 property, they pay just £730 per month off their 11 year mortgage, and £152 in monthly rental payments. Julie and Martin no longer need to worry about "wasting money on private rent."

"The process was very good," said Martin. "This has really changed our lives by giving us long term security. We had given up on the idea of having a place of our own until we looked into Shared Ownership as being in our fifties, we thought we were too old to have a mortgage."
