"Buying our Shared Ownership resale home was very simple"

Most people want to be able to buy place of their own and with affordable home ownership schemes available, and as little as a 5% deposit required, this dream is achievable.

Richard and Jenny Smith, from Southampton, were familiar with the schemes and knew that Shared Ownership would be the perfect option for them. The couple registered with HomesinHants, the Help to Buy agent for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight and began their property search.

"Whilst we were waiting for a suitable property for our long term home, we had been renting a one bed flat via a Keyworkers scheme." explains Jenny.

Richard (33) and Jenny (30) found saving a deposit for a Shared Ownership property, whilst paying a lower, discounted rent through the Keyworkers scheme easier than if they if they were renting privately.

Shared Ownership enables purchasers to buy a share in a home, paying a low cost rent on the remaining un-purchased share. With mortgage deposits based on the value of the share, buying your first home couldn't be more affordable and could even end up costing you less per month than renting a similar place privately.

After regularly checking the property listings on the HomesinHants website, Richard and Jenny arranged a viewing on a 2 bedroom Radian shared ownership resale property, and decided this was the place they would finally call 'home'. The resale scheme applies to existing Shared Ownership properties that become available for sale; you can buy the current share, or more, from the current owner.

The mid terrace home features a kitchen / diner, and a garden which is not overlooked. The couple were pleased that previous owners had a similar taste in style, as they didn't need to do a lot to the property, other than make it their own.

"Buying our home was very simple, we registered our interest and viewed the property." said Richard. Once we had a mortgage in place, the whole process was easy. We weren't sure how long the process would take, but it was no more than buying on the private market." he added.

Purchasing a 50% share in the £147,000 property, the couple pay just £376 per month in mortgage payments and £153 in rent and service charges.
