Help to Buy South has helped hundreds of people to purchase or rent their new home.  Here are just a few of the success stories:

"We couldn't wait to have a place of our own"

Wendy Williams, an office manager from Southampton, and her husband Sean, a Warehouseman for a local haulage company, applied for the Shared Ownership scheme in hope for a better standard of living, and secure living accommodation after renting for years. The couple wanted a stable family home as they were approved as foster carers in 2013, and with their 9 month old daughter, Summer, growing up quickly, this prompted their application with HomesinHants, the Help to Buy agent for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

"We were living in a two bedroom, privately rented ground floor maisonette," said Wendy. "The monthly payments were very pricey, and the living conditions were very poor as the property had a lot of damp and mould. This was not practical for our daughter Summer and 7 week old foster child, as it was making them ill. It also ruined a lot of our clothes and possessions, so we couldn't wait to have a place of our own," she added.

Shared Ownership enables purchasers to buy a share in a home, paying a low cost rent on the remaining un-purchased share. With mortgage deposits based on the value of the share, buying your first home couldn't be more affordable.

Having lived in the Shirley, Southampton, for many years, Wendy and Sean wanted to stay in the area and kept an eye on Selby Place, a new development being offered by Radian. The couple expressed their interest and viewed the property plans. They were delighted when prioritised for their preferred plot, and looked forward to becoming home owners.

"The Selby Place development is near to all our family and friends and the close to the shops, schools, the town centre, hospitals and our doctors," said Wendy. "We watched Selby Place being built from start to finish; we always used to say how lovely it would be to live there until one day my mum said that we should register our interest, as we had nothing to lose. We never thought we would be able to afford it!"

The family moved into their three bedroom home, and looked forward to their new beginnings in a brand new, modern property.

"All of the rooms are very spacious and everyone complements the size of our downstairs WC!" said Sean. "Our front room is a great size for our children, and we love the French doors that open out to the garden, we have always wanted those."

The couple purchased a 35% share of their £160,000 home. Paying less that £450 in monthly mortgage, rent and service charges, Wendy and Sean are saving £210 per month compared to when they were privately renting.

"I would definitely recommend this scheme to anyone. My advice would be to look into the process of mortgages and home buying first if you have never done it before as it can be quite daunting but we got there in the end and we are very happy in our new, lovely home."
